Short Comedy Film
Rated 5 out of 5

PG - Rated

Convinced they’ll get better care in jail than an aged care facility, Marg and Jerri hatch a plan to get arrested.

Short film is a difficult medium. It’s as difficult as making a feature film, but without the extra time to make up for the bits that don’t work.

That’s why it pleases me deeply to report that there’s no way I could’ve torn myself away from watching Super, despite my prostate issues. All the elements of the craft of great filmmaking are on display — from the premise to the screenwriting, from the production values to the acting — it’s a film that captures the zeitgeist yet remains wholly surprising, even though those two accomplishments should be mutually exclusive.

Filmmaking is the only artform that demands teamwork. Novelists and musicians, artists and dancers, actors and stand-up comedians: they can all do it by themselves. A filmmaker cannot, and that’s why Jannah’s accomplishment is as impressive as it is. Not only did she bring and keep together an amazing team to make the film itself, she brought and kept together a team that sponsored and supported it from pre-production to promotion.

This is no small feat, and it’s exactly where the future of home-grown Queensland movie-making lies.

As for my actual review, the movie maths is easy:

(The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel + Iris) x Pulp Fiction, in 13 minutes.

Meet Our Cast

Cath Willacy

Jerri

Cath found theatre in her teenage years and although she was too shy to try and make a go of it as a living, her family would assure you that she’s never stopped acting – on or off stage or camera! There’s also an ex-husband somewhere who will be furious now he knows she really can cry on demand… Yep, he was right.

Born in North Wales, Cath moved around UK for her work, then to Hong Kong for 16 years and finally came to Australia in 2009. Everywhere she’s lived, she found a community theatre which became her haven and creative outlet. As one of her ex-bosses would attest, Cath worked far better during the day for her corporate employer when she was also involved in a production, as it got her theatrics out of the way in a controlled environment – and yes, they’re still friends! And yes, she did appear in various corporate videos for her employer. Better than working, right?

Since moving to the Sunshine State Cath can now add directing, producing and playwriting to her CV, as well as venturing into the movie world, playing Sarah in The Last Spark, Amy in the comedy short Zombies V the CWA and even a music video!

Playing Jerri has been a SUPER-special experience and Cath will be eternally grateful to the enormously-talented Jannah for giving her the opportunity to show people that there’s definitely life in the old dogs, and to get to play Jerri who is… no, wait… you have to see the movie first, right?

Lynn Cropp

Marg

Having burst through the blankets pegged to the clothesline onto the backyard stage in Southern Ontario, Canada. at a very early age, Lynn has had a passion for performance ever since.

Conservative parents stymied the dream to be on stage in favour of a more stable profession, however, once financially independent the call of the wild took hold and eventually Lynn made her home in Far North Queensland, Australia, making nature documentaries, a family, and renewing her passion through community theatre and the odd professional role.

SUPER was meant to be, obviously.  Lynn was cast from a photo shoot for a tea towel, which effectively skipped the audition process and the rest is history.   Jannah’s quirky, creative humour makes the script sparkle.  Comedy wins, but Lynn especially enjoyed the challenge of effectively delivering laughter through tears.

Grant 'scooter' Patterson

Tony

My name is Grant “Scooter” Patterson. I get around on a trike, which is how I got the nickname Scooter. I was born with a rare disability called diastrophic dysplasia, which has left me with short stature, a curved spine, and a lack of cartilage in all my joints—hence the trike.

I’ve been part of the Australian swim team since 2009, representing Australia at multiple World Championships and two Paralympics: London 2012 and Tokyo 2020, where I won my first silver and bronze medals. Now, I’m officially on my way to the Paris 2024 Summer Paralympic Games.

What I do in the pool is a stepping stone for sharing my story to inspire and motivate the current and next generations not to settle for second best but to go out on a limb and make something from nothing! Acting in film is another great love of mine, especially comedy roles. I love a good laugh and believe that humor is a powerful way to connect with people. Through comedy, I can reach a broader audience, break down barriers, and show that no matter the challenges we face, we can find joy and achieve greatness. My goal is to inspire others not just with my swimming but also through the laughter and joy I bring to the screen.

Tao Hancock-Vue

Missy

Growing up on farms in Innisfail, acting was always a cherished dream for me. The allure of the stage and screen captivated me from a young age, but my journey towards the limelight was anything but straightforward. My shyness, coupled with the challenges of being an ethnic minority and the influence of my conservative parents, steered me away from pursuing my passion. As a teenager, I was enchanted by the world of Harry Potter and yearned to play the role of Cho Chang, Harry Potter’s love interest. When the role was cast and it wasn’t me, I was heartbroken, feeling a dream slip through my fingers.

Years passed, and I embraced the joys and responsibilities of adulthood and motherhood. With two young children to care for, I buried my dreams of acting, convinced that the opportunity had sailed long ago. Then, twenty years later, fate intervened. Scrolling through social media, I stumbled upon a post from Yarner with auditions for SUPER. Something in me reignited, a spark I thought had long been extinguished and I was thrilled to score the role of Missy

Joining Yarner has been a transformative experience. It has rekindled my love for acting and given me a sense of purpose I thought was lost forever. I am excited about the many roles the future holds and look forward to continuing this unexpected journey, embracing each opportunity with the enthusiasm and dedication of that young girl who once dreamed of Hogwarts.
